Recycling & Energy

Recycling reduces the demand for both raw material and energy inputs to various manufacturing industries. Thus, recycling serves to both conserve energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout a larger industrial sector. When added up, the amount of energy wasted by not recycling aluminum and steel cans, paper, printed materials, glass, and plastic is equal to the annual output of 15 medium-sized power plants. In fact, a comprehensive U.S. recycling and composting program would reduce greenhouse gas emissions as much as taking half of U.S. cars off the road, or closing 21% of American coal-fired power plants.
